About 11 percent of people polled in an online survey released by market research firm Nielsen during the weekend picked overseas travel destinations over domestic ones for the coming vacation, with the top three places for short-haul trips being Hong Kong (60 percent), Taiwan (29 percent) and Macao (23 percent).

“In these challenging economic times, travelers on the mainland are looking for ways to save, including organizing trips themselves and planning short- to medium- haul trips,” said Grace Pan, head of travel and leisure research at Nielsen’s China operations.

“All the 400 seats in our Taiwan tour groups were booked 20 days before the deadline and we have at least one group leaving for the island every day of the holiday period,” said Zhang Qingzhu, a marketing manager with China Comfort Travel Ltd.

There are some (short) musical shows that are worth watching in Disneyland. We went to The Golden Mickeys and Festival of the Lion King; both were great.

Golden Mickeys was a show mimicking the Oscar awards, which featured various cartoon characters and stories, e.g. The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, and also the iconic Mickey, Minnie, Donald etc.; while Festival of the Lion King was based on 1994 animated movie, The Lion King.

The Mira Hotel was recently renovated and the rooms here are more spacious with a hip boutique style design. Back since the 1940′s it was one of the fanciest hotels in the neighborhood and after an extensive overhaul it still is today. Both hotels are right on Nathan road with MTR train stations within easy reach.

Just further up Nathan road is the Prudential Hotel and BP International Hotel. These two hotels are even more affordable and also offer easy access to the MTR and is a great area to explore local culinary delights. Having been built by Hong Kong’s Urban Council, the Coliseum is situated in Kowloon and is actually used more often as an indoor arena. Its name in Chinese is derived from the meaning of sport, but the variety of events held at this venue far exceeds the limits of physical sports. The areas popular singers often prefer to hold concerts here, since its seating capacity is in the thousands.

To be exact, the Hong Kong Coliseum has a seating capacity of about 12,500 making it the second largest indoor stadium in the country. If you are lover of plants, Lou Lim Ioc Gardens is a beautified place where you can find a myriad of European and Chinese plants adjoining an opulently columned and curved hall.

Sun Yatsen Memorial Home, located on the southern slope of Yuexiu Hill, is memorial house that was constructed between 1929 and 1931. This outlandishly Moorish-style memorial house pays honor to the originator of the Chinese Republic ‘Sun Yatsen’.

Kun Iam Temple is temple complex that was established in the 13th century. The complex is devoted to the Goddess of Mercy. This is classic Chinese temple area, and you must see the eaves assembled with ceramic designs of fish, flowers and dragons,

Situated in the Southern District of Hong Kong Island, Ocean Park is the marine-theme fun park covering up the Wong Chuk Hang and Nam Long Shan area. It offers reasonable marine animal education and leisure and is a private organization for commercial purposes. Lantau Island is best for cruising around and watching dolphins that live in waters. You can really have great fun on the Island.

Disney Land

Recently opened in 2005, the 310 acre HongKong DisneyLand draws 4.5 million visitors yearly. The park, like its sister parks around the world, has four themed ‘lands’ – Main Street, TomorrowLand, AdventureLand and FantasyLand. The smallest of all DisneyLands, HongKong DisneyLand was built to accommodate up to 34,000 visitors a day but has so far not met this target. For visitors sick of the queuing at the other DisneyLands, this is definitely a relief.

The park uses mostly English and Mandarin for communication with visitors but has guide maps available in Chinese (simplifed and traditional) in addition to Japanese and English.

Victoria Peak

One of the most scenic places to visit in Hongkong, this 552m tall mountain overlooks the Kowloon City and Victoria Harbour, offering breath-taking views at night. Known locally as The Peak, Victoria Peak is found on the western half of Hongkong. The top-most portion of the mountain is closed to public due to the telecommunications tower but most other parts are open to the public. Drawing some 7 million visitors to the peak, the site get crowded towards the evening where visitors enjoy spectacular views of the city lights. With 2 shopping centres built to cater to tourists, Victor Peak offers a full day of shopping in the morning and dining plus photo-taking in the evening.

Ocean Park

Ocean Park is a marine-themed amusement park opened in 1977 and draws close to 5 million visitors a year. Among the most popular attractions there are ‘The Dragon’ roller coaster and the California sea lion display.

In the original Disneyland, Fantasyland is well known for the symbol that people think of when speaking of Disney – Cinderella’s Castle. Hong Kong Disneyland’s version is the castle of Sleeping Beauty, where children can explore the fairy tale and their own imagination. They can also visit the grotto of another Disney princess, Snow White. Cinderella is there too, represented by a beautiful carousel ride. There’s everyone’s favorite bear at The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ride. More popular Disney rides include the Mad Hatter Tea Cups and Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Children and grown-ups can watch a 3-D movie with all the favorite Disney characters at Mickey’s PhilharMagic or The Golden Mickeys at Disney’s Storybook Theater. Visitors can choose to stay inside the park at one of the two beautiful new hotels. The Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel is designed to take you back in time to the grandness of the Victorian era. The European influence is obvious in the 400 luxuriously appointed rooms. Guests can enjoy spa services at the hotel as well. At Disney’s Hollywood Hotel, the 600 guest rooms are decorated in an art deco style, meant to bring back the allure of the golden age of Hollywood.
