In Hong Kong cars for sale are to be found in many locations the average expat wouldn’t expect. You won’t find acres of open air lots with used cars scattered about, as open space like this is at a premium in Hong Kong. Where you will find used car dealers is in the basements of building car parks or occupying part, or all of a level of a multi-story car park. These car lots may be a single used car dealership, or many smaller dealers sharing the space.

All makes of cars are available, with some models possibly differing from your home country. The most common vehicles on Hong Kong roads would be BMW, Mercedes and Toyota. Most of these vehicles can be found, as used cars, for reasonable prices, although not many dealers offer any kind of warranty.

One thing many expats find confronting when dealing with local used car salesmen, is that many of them who are not used to dealing with us will require you to negotiate and decide on a price for the car before you test drive it. This is standard practice for many used car dealers here as to them it shows that you are serious about buying the car. Of course it should be understood that you are free to change your mind or renegotiate should the used car’s test drive not be up to expectation.

If you’re thinking of buying a used car in Hong Kong you must have somewhere to park it. May sound obvious but many apartments will not have a parking space included, or even available. There is a healthy market for car parking spaces as many people who are not using theirs often lease or sell it.

There are many hotels throughout Hong Kong and staying in one can be quite expensive. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t find affordable hotels at all in Hong Kong. Your best option is to take a look at hotels in the Kowloon peninsula, just north of Hong Kong island.

The Kowloon peninsula is the gateway to China. But it’s also a bustling small city, so small you can walk across the narrowest point in less than a day. Kowloon is made up of several districts with names like Tsim Sha Tsui (TST), Mongkok, Jordan and Yau Ma Tei. The main avenue called Nathan road runs through all these districts so if you’re on Nathan road you’re never lost.

Now the best hotels in Kowloon are found near or on Nathan road. Hong Kong’s underground train system also runs mostly beneath Nathan road with many stations above ground. The MTR also runs through a tunnel beneath Hong Kong harbor and straight into Hong Kong island. Plus there are many great restaurant options from cheap eats to gourmet delights with top price. Whatever your budget is you’ll be able to fill your stomach with food that’s way better than the take out back home.

Several of the best hotels in Kowloon are found in the Tsim Sha Tsui district such as the Holiday Inn and the Mira Hotel. The Holiday Inn of course is a popular chain of hotels in the USA but the rooms here are small. The Mira Hotel was recently renovated and the rooms here are more spacious with a hip boutique style design. Back since the 1940’s it was one of the fanciest hotels in the neighborhood and after an extensive overhaul it still is today. Both hotels are right on Nathan road with MTR train stations within easy reach.

Just further up Nathan road is the Prudential Hotel and BP International Hotel. These two hotels are even more affordable and also offer easy access to the MTR and is a great area to explore local culinary delights. The Prudential Hotel however has bigger rooms so it’s quite popular with returning guests. The BP International’s rooms are smaller, yet very clean, comfortable and modern.

Hong Kong’s Coliseum is a popular gathering place for citizen’s to be entertained, albeit in a more sedate form than the Romans.

Having been built by Hong Kong’s Urban Council, the Coliseum is situated in Kowloon and is actually used more often as an indoor arena. Its name in Chinese is derived from the meaning of sport, but the variety of events held at this venue far exceeds the limits of physical sports. The areas popular singers often prefer to hold concerts here, since its seating capacity is in the thousands.

To be exact, the Hong Kong Coliseum has a seating capacity of about 12,500 making it the second largest indoor stadium in the country. The Coliseum’s frontage is perhaps one of its most unusual features that begs to be noticed from the outside. Its inverted pyramid structure has now become one the most popular features of Hong Kong’s skyline.

If tourists are not tempted to explore its interior through curiosity, then its sheer size is bound to impress. Like all arenas, the benefit of viewing, is further enhanced by the wide open spaces which are void of columns, providing an unobstructed view and this venue.

The Hong Kong Coliseum comprises of three main areas. Those include the Piazza, Box Office and of course the Arena. But in addition to this, the venue also offers other services such as dining and some ancillary features as well. In terms of ancillary features, the Coliseum offers a VIP Lounge and a few function rooms often used for press conferences and receptions which are conducted in conjunction with performances to be held in the arena.

Since its inception in the 80’s it has been the venue of choice for countless international conferences and events. It has also witnessed the performances of Air Supply, pop heavy weight Elton John and Latin heart throb Ricky Martin, not to mention Jackie Chan and Andy Lau also chose the Coliseum as their concert venue. Some of the venue’s most memorable performances were from the New York Philharmonic, the ‘Disney on Ice’ show and tenor Placido Domingo – now that’s entertainment!

Apart from its size and seating capacity which are all plus points, the HongKong Coliseum is also situated at the centre of many public transport access points. Being right next to the railway station, tourists could hop on and step in for a quick look around and take another one to enter the city and return to their accommodation.

Hong Kong is famous for being an excellent fishing location. While the family is out shopping and seeing the sites, you can enjoy your favorite sport in new, exotic waters. You’ll never forget the fishing in China adventure!

Hong Kong was a gem in Great Britain’s colonial crown from 1852 until its 1997 when its sovereignty was transferred to the People’s Republic of China. Though it’s part of China, Hong Kong will have much autonomy for 50 years, until 2047. It’s a favorite vacation location, offering spectacular architecture, sophisticated culture, and surrounded by fantastic natural beauty.

Hong Kong offers unlimited tourism attractions – exciting night life, busy exotic markets, and some of the best fishing in the world. Located on the Pacific Coast, Hong Kong is surrounded by ocean, making for excellent salt water fishing. And Victoria Harbor hosts many islands and smaller natural harbors that are home to a wide variety of fish species. Popular fishing harbors include Kwun Tong, Kowloon, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Hong Kong Island.

Being an ocean port, Hong Kong offers excellent salt water fishing. Fish are plentiful throughout the harbors. And even in this highly populated area, you can find quiet peaceful fishing on the peninsula of Stanley. Stanley contains an open-air market where your family can find an amazing array of inexpensive Chinese clothing, souvenirs, arts, and crafts while you enjoy fishing in Hong Kong. You can fish off one of the beautiful Stanley beaches.

Local anglers say some of the best fishing in Hong Kong can be found at Lamma Island and the Sai Kung peninsula. These scenic spots recall traditional Chinese fishing villages, and you can find dependable charter boats. You can get to Sai Kung by car, taxi, or bus. Lamma Island is a short boat-ride southwest of Hong Kong Island. The ride costs from $25 to $50 US. Lamma Island is a great spot for rock fishing.

Salt water fishing in Hong Kong is like salt water fishing everywhere. Use your old familiar techniques or try deep sea fishing from a boat or surf fishing. You can also do plenty of fresh water fishing in Hong Kong. Nearby reservoirs offer carp, Big Head Tilapia, and edible Goldfish.

If you’re planning a trip to China, you’ll find some great fishing in Hong Kong. The area is full of wonderful sights and sounds. Tourists find and endless supply of attractions, so your family will never get bored waiting for you to bring home your catch. The surrounding area is spectacularly beautiful, and fishing in Hong Kong is an adventure you’ll never forget.

The Hong Kong golf industry has clearly become increasingly popular over the last decade. Golfing in Hong Kong is excellent though due to the excellent quality of the facilities and grounds at the various Hong Kong golf clubs. Any tourists visiting that enjoy playing golf should definitely consider visiting one of the local golf clubs.

Hong Kong golf courses have become a very popular golf venue for Japanese golf players. One of the reasons for the increase in the number of Japanese golfers visiting Hong Kong is that there has been an increase in the number of daily flights between Hong Kong and Japan and the cost of flight tickets has decreased sharply.

The cheaper flights are mainly due to the increasing number of airlines that fly the route between Hong Kong and Japan. The Hong Kong golf courses are much appreciated and admired by Japanese golf players for the high quality of facilities provided to golfers. However the main reason for Japanese golfers to go play golf in Hong Kong is the availability and the very low fees of the clubs.

Green fees in Japan are extremely expensive and even getting a time slot to play can be a difficult if not impossible task. It is frequently cheaper and easier for Japanese golf players to fly down to Hong Kong for a round of golf then to play a round of golf back home.

The number of golf venues has recently expanded with the arrival of two new golf courses. The two recently opened golf clubs are located in the New Territories at Sai Kung and Kau Sai Chau.

With more than 250 islands, Hong Kong is the special administrative region of China. Earlier a British colony, Hong Kong became a part of China in 1997, under a special agreement. Hong Kong has now become one of the prominent economies of the region.

Among the accommodation options available in Hong Kong, perhaps the most sough after one is apartments. An apartment in Hong Kong is a self contained residential unit, which is mostly a part of a large building or property. For many reasons, both expatriates and natives choose to live in Hong Kong apartments. Perhaps the most important reasons are convenience and lifestyle it renders.

Based on your requirements, you can choose from a continuum of superb apartments, from garden and furnished apartments to self contained and serviced apartments. There are also apartments that are specially designed for students, such as, student apartments.

Mostly, this type of apartment comes complete with superb facilities including excellent accommodation, high speed internet access, and uninterrupted power as well as water supply. Further, many of these apartments are located within the easy reach of top academic institutions in Hong Kong. All of this provides a great atmosphere in order to promote your academic success. For those seeking luxury, then one of the best choices would be stunning serviced apartments coupled with extensive recreational as well as sporting facilities.

Different types of apartments in Hong Kong are further categorized into duplex apartments, studio apartments, and townhouses. Duplex apartments are mostly situated on the bottom floor, and range from small building with two to five apartments to large property with more than 50 or 60 apartments. A studio apartment is an accommodation facility with a large living area, apart from a kitchen and bath area. In townhouses, a family will get more space as well as a comfortable feel. One of the specialties of townhouses is that mostly they are located in rows.

Likewise, depending upon the members of the family, apartments types include apartments with one bedroom – which come with built-in wardrobes, luxury bathrooms, and fully equipped kitchen; two-bedroom apartments, which in most cases garage unit will be included in the price; and three-bedroom apartment, which is much spacious and inclusive of high end comforts such as kitchen, lounge, laundry, and a marvelous terrace.

One of the prime advantages of living in Hong Kong apartments is that it enables you to live amid diverse community. Another advantage is that you will be always surrounded by a large number of neighbors and friends. If you acquire apartments on rental or lease basis, then some of the apartments charge rent, which is sometimes inclusive of electricity, local telephone service, cable TV hook up, and trash disposal. Another great benefit of owning an apartment in Hong Kong is that it serves as an excellent long term investment.

Owning or renting an apartment in Hong Kong is no longer a chaotic process. A plethora of real estate companies and construction companies are there in order to help finding your dream apartment. However, the prices of apartments in Hong Kong are exceptionally high.

Hong Kong is known among many of its visitors as a high end shopping destination packed with trendy clothes, cutting edge electronics equipment and expensive luxury items. Shopping in Hong Kong is not just limited to air conditioned malls and department stores. Perhaps some of the best bargains and the most interesting items can be found in these street markets.

Many street markets in Hong Kong either ply a certain variety of goods or goods that represent a certain ethnic group. One of the best places to buy something special for your relatives or friends back is the Stanley Market. It is a traditional open air street market that has become a major tourist attraction in Hong Kong. The market sells everything from clothes to souvenirs and is known as a bargain hunter’s paradise. The silk clothes and traditional Chinese toys and garments are of special interest here.

Many residential areas in Hong Kong are filled with the melodious song of caged birds, where do they all come from? Most probably from the bird market in Yuen Po Street, many song birds are bought and sold in this market which also a place of congregation for bird enthusiasts and song bird owners. This dark and rather derelict alleyway is usually frequented by old men who proudly show off their birds to their peers, not necessarily with intention of selling but mostly for show. Intricately crafted bird cages, bird feed and a variety of song birds of various species from all over the world can be found at this market.

The Hong Kong Flower market is the perfect place to buy a bunch of sweet smelling flowers for that special someone back home, a variety of flowers from local Chinese varieties to expensive imported flowers can be found here. Bonsai plants, rare houseplant and certain varieties of plants that bring good fortune to your family can be found here as well. The novelty of visiting a brightly colored and delightfully fragrant market is the major draw for tourists however many locals purchase flowers for weddings, funerals and traditional festivals here.

There are many street markets in Hong Kong and chances are that any hotel in Hong Kong will have one close by; a visit is worthwhile and gives you a chance to experience a distinctly different way of shopping.

Hong Kong is one of the safest places to own a boat in Asia and probably in the world. Hong Kong has over 200 small islands in the waters nearby to cruise around, and there is a lot to go around in while you are boating.

Of course the government rules, taxes, maintenance and upkeep of the boat are main concerns. Well, and for that, Hong Kong is probably the best country in Asia. In terms of taxes, there are virtually no taxes on pleasure boats, that’s why the used boats in Hong Kong are very well priced. There is a very minimal charge of yearly license for the HK marine department. The procedure of transferring ownership of a pleasure yacht is also very efficient.

Hong Kong has about 8 main marina clubs with high standard of management and professional services, and lots of government moorings to keep your boat if you wish not to be a club member. The berths in the marinas can be bought or rented, fairly easily.

About maintenance, Hong Kong has plenty of shipyards around, Aberdeen, Sai Kung, Causeway Bay and Shaukiwan areas. They provide all sorts of services for pleasure boats, and getting spare parts is easy. Many times you can get spare parts for engines and electronics off shelf from shops around Aberdeen, Ap Lei Chau. There are also local dealers for almost all kind of electronics and gadgets that are used by all main manufacturers of boats.

Hiring a crew, is also not a difficult job here. Hong Kong surely has most professional boating crew who have good experience in taking care of pleasure yachts. English speaking crew are also available.

To buy a boat in Hong Kong, its obviously important that you contact a broker or agent, who will let you know the market values of the boat, and let you know the condition and quality of the boat honestly. If you are looking for a great bargain, then you have to be realistic and accept certain defects. If you are buying a used boat, it is wise to ask the agent to hire a professional marine surveyor from Hong Kong to do the survey before confirming the purchase. HK marine surveyors are very professional and they understand the issues and handling of the boats here much more than a surveyor overseas. So you will be cutting a lot of guess work if the surveyor knows the local know-how and understands how the crew maintained a certain boat.

If you are buying a new boat, it maybe a good idea to hire a surveyor. However some manufacturers do not welcome surveyors, as they don’t wish to be overlooked (usually European ones). However, a good surveyor can help the buyer and the factory, to find any defects which otherwise may have to be addressed after the boat has been shipped to HK. This will save the factory time and money.

Normally a good agent will explain and handle most of these matters, buyers however have to be realistic while paying the agent fair price for their services. Because their work and honesty can save the buyer lot of money and trouble in the future. For big transactions the buyers can also choose to hire a lawyer or solicitors to do a closing. However normally for small transactions of boats less than 80 footers for example, are done through the agent.

Last but not least, while you are shipping the boat overseas, do make sure that you know the tax procedures in your end, and have enough man power to unload your boat and deliver it to your location, and also be aware of the rules and regulations in your country while importing the boat.

Hong Kong – Its Mandarin name literally meaning ‘fragrant harbor’ is an island located opposite the Guangdong province of the Chinese Mainland. Famous for its exciting nightlife and good hawker food, Hong Kong draws an estimated 29.5 million tourists in 2008. Here are interesting places you must visit when you are in Hong Kong.

Disney Land

Recently opened in 2005, the 310 acre HongKong DisneyLand draws 4.5 million visitors yearly. The park, like its sister parks around the world, has four themed ‘lands’ – Main Street, TomorrowLand, AdventureLand and FantasyLand. The smallest of all DisneyLands, HongKong DisneyLand was built to accommodate up to 34,000 visitors a day but has so far not met this target. For visitors sick of the queuing at the other DisneyLands, this is definitely a relief.

The park uses mostly English and Mandarin for communication with visitors but has guide maps available in Chinese (simplifed and traditional) in addition to Japanese and English.

Victoria Peak

One of the most scenic places to visit in Hongkong, this 552m tall mountain overlooks the Kowloon City and Victoria Harbour, offering breath-taking views at night. Known locally as The Peak, Victoria Peak is found on the western half of Hongkong. The top-most portion of the mountain is closed to public due to the telecommunications tower but most other parts are open to the public. Drawing some 7 million visitors to the peak, the site get crowded towards the evening where visitors enjoy spectacular views of the city lights. With 2 shopping centres built to cater to tourists, Victor Peak offers a full day of shopping in the morning and dining plus photo-taking in the evening.

Ocean Park

Ocean Park is a marine-themed amusement park opened in 1977 and draws close to 5 million visitors a year. Among the most popular attractions there are ‘The Dragon’ roller coaster and the California sea lion display.
